Sometimes megayacht builders and designers decide to re-team for future projects before a current collaborative project is even finished. Such is the case with Blohm+Voss and Michael Leach Design. The two have joined forces on the 88m MCA Yacht Concept, based on their work on Palladium.
According to Cristian Schwarzwälder, Blohm+Voss’ yacht-sales director, the conversation over this concept project started about three years ago. It was a full two years before Blohm+Voss delivered the 315-foot (96-meter) Palladium, which is highly customized and stylized. Graced with distinctive curves, she’s most striking for having skylights and oversize windows, including horizontal glass panes that hug her upper superstructure. Those latter features make Palladium every bit one owner’s vision. Still, however, Blohm+Voss and Michael Leach Design felt certain stylistic elements held broader appeal.
Compare the photo of Palladium in the link above with the scale model shown here, and you’ll note that the 88m MCA Yacht Concept echoes the distinctive curves. Measuring 290 feet (88.5 meters, hence the “88m” part of her name), the concept project is, of course, a bit smaller. However, she’s meant to be no less voluminous. The 88m MCA Yacht Concept is intended to remain beneath the 3,000-gross-tons threshold and still comply with MCA requirements, rather than SOLAS rules. She’ll also have a beam of 51 feet (15.4 meters).
Blohm+Voss will customize the general arrangement in accordance with a buyer’s wishes. For now, the layout provides accommodations for just 12 in the owner’s party, which should translate to large staterooms. In addition, all guest staterooms are to be on the main deck, with the owner getting the entire deck directly above. The owner’s deck includes a private saloon and private alfresco areas. Another feature the eventual buyer would be wise to preserve: a “panorama deck” fully up top.
Expected to be run by a crew of 30, the 88m MCA Yacht Concept should see a range of 5,000 nautical miles at 15 knots with traditional diesel power. Top speed should be 17 knots.
In related news, the parent company of Blohm+Voss, ThyssenKrupp, is said to be in negotiations with a UK firm to acquire Blohm+Voss. Talks began after a deal with Abu Dhabi MAR fell through in July. Earlier this month, ThyssenKrupp rejected an offer by Lürssen to acquire the yacht yard.
