If you’ve seen the movie Jaws, no doubt you remember the line, “We’re gonna need a bigger boat.” Well, fishing fanatics will likely utter those same words once they get a load of Mary P, the latest launch from Trinity Yachts. This awesome angler–all 122 feet of her–was christened at Trinity’s New Orleans facility (it operates another in Gulfport, Mississippi) earlier this month. The launch was additionally noteworthy, as it marked the first hull built and splashed in the Big Easy yard since its post-Hurricane Katrina reopening in July 2006.
Mary P was commissioned by an experienced boating couple (they previously owned a 90-footer by the same name) who requested some pretty sophisticated elements for her design and performance. For example, being able to back down on a fish is key when there’s a big one on the line, so the transom can’t get buried in the sea, and maneuvering needs to be just as effective as the normal forward mode. The Trinity team and naval architect Doug Sharp of Sharp Designs therefore did hull tank-testing and other extensive related research to ensure both goals were met.
Being able to back down is all for naught if the yacht isn’t stable, so Mary P features an interesting one-two punch of a Quantum MagLift stabilization system and Archer trim tabs. The combo permits stability at low speeds as well as zero speed, but even better for Mary P, creates no drag whether running at 25 knots out to the bite, while trolling, and particularly while backing down. Reportedly no other yachtfisherman in the world has a system to permit such stability while backing down.
Additional tech-oriented features include an automated anchor deployment and retrieval system, underwater lighting tailor-made for night fishing, and a flying-bridge layout emphasizing excellent visibility, particularly aft.
As for her creature comforts, multiple woods such as oak burl, African zebra, and Japanese sen are used throughout the interior. Eight people in the owner’s party are accommodated in four staterooms, and a crew of three is housed in two staterooms.
Expect to see Mary P prowling big seas for big fish within the next few months.
