In about two weeks I’ll be visiting Derecktor Shipyards, where I’ll get an up-close look at Cakewalk, a 281-footer representing the largest yacht built on U.S. soil since the 1930s.
Construction should be a bit more advanced than the photo above shows, as she’s expected to be delivered later this year. The rendering below gives you a good idea of how she’ll ultimately look, featuring styling from Tim Heywood Designs. (Note his signature sweep, where the hull meets the superstructure.)
If you follow the megayacht market, then you likely recognize the Cakewalk name. The owners, an American couple, previously had a 204’5” Feadship that chartered for many years, as well as three smaller yachts prior to that. In keeping with the luxurious style of these builds, this Cakewalk will include a grand internal staircase connecting four of the six decks, larger than usual gathering areas inside and out, and an overall décor, from Dalton Designs, akin to that of a manor home.
Perhaps the most interesting thing about the yacht’s layout is the fact that all six guest staterooms are above decks. I can imagine the views friends and family will enjoy through the picture-window-like ports; definitely not your traditional small, round ports. In keeping with the luxurious theme elsewhere, each en suite bath will include spa tubs and showers; usually spa tubs are reserved for the owner’s suite and perhaps the VIP.
Speaking of the owner’s suite, it occupies the full interior of the deck one level up from the main deck, containing a gym and private saloon/theater. Aft is an alfresco dining and lounging area that should handily accommodate 16 people.
Looking forward to my visit. I’ll post an update in the April edition of the Megayacht News e-newsletter.
