UPDATE, APRIL 29, 2013: Project Dream was seen in early April with a perfectly matching helicopter on deck, marked with the name Madame Gu. That was the first clue to yacht watchers that Project Dream may actually be named Madame Gu, and they were right. Today, Madame Gu, her nameboard fully visible (previously it was hidden with a temporary plate), departed the Dutch port of Harlingen for her official hand-over. The megayacht had been conducting sea trials in Harlingen for a few weeks.
If you’ve been following the megayacht market for several years, then you may recall a previous Dutch-built (Amels, not Feadship) megayacht with a similar name: simply Gu. She measured 190 feet, or 58 meters, and given the name similarity, many yacht watchers believe the owners are one in the same.
Read on for the original story from February:
She’s a dream for her owners, and arguably also for Feadship. Meet the 324’8” (99-meter) Project Dream, the largest megayacht to date to be built by the Dutch yard, and largest megayacht so far constructed in Holland.
As you’d expect of such a megayacht, completed at Feadship’s De Vries Makkum facility, Project Dream has a steel hull and aluminum superstructure. Draft is 15’1” (4.6 meters), However, what is certainly unexpected is her turn of speed and power package: reportedly 24 knots, with power from quadruple MTU 20V4000 M73s. Of course, Project Dream won’t run flat out full time. That would burn through her 66,000 gallons (250,000 liters) of fuel far too fast, and be counterproductive to the all-important transatlantic range. Regardless, fast, super-size superyachts aren’t entirely new for Feadship. The 238’8” (72.8-meter) Predator, for example, delivered in 2008, proved to the yacht-buying and yacht-watching public that some Feadship owners enjoy coming close to 30 knots.
The owner of Project Dream tapped Andrew Winch Designs for styling and interior design and De Voogt Naval Architects for engineering and naval architecture. The megayacht has accommodations for a total of 12 in the owner’s party and 36 crewmembers. Though no one is permitted to reveal details of the arrangement or decor, it’s safe to assume Project Dream will keep everyone comfortable, given the beam of 44’6” (13.6 meters), She also has a heli hangar on her bow, plus abundant toys like tenders and scuba gear.
No one associated with the megayacht is permitted to reveal her real name at this point, either.
