Mid-May saw the launch of the Moonen 100 Explorer launch for a repeat client, a megayacht blending elements of expedition yachts with more traditional ones.
If the profile photo of the yacht above seems like it’s missing something, it’s because the Moonen 100 Explorer did not yet have her navigation mast attached when she emerged from the build shed. The overhead clearance of the shed simply didn’t allow for it. So, once the megayacht made her way into the water, craftsmen carefully lowered it via a crane and then set it in place (below).
The owners of the Moonen 100 Explorer intend to do some globetrotting, so the megayacht carries about 9,510 gallons (36,000 liters) of fuel. With input from Vripack, Moonen engineered the bulbous-bow-equipped megayacht to have a fuel-extending 5,000-nautical-mile range while traveling at 10 knots, powered by twin 609-hp Caterpilllars. Considering cruising speed is only slightly higher, 12 knots (at 50-percent load), it’s a figure that should translate to real-world experience.
Also related to the extensive travel the owners plan, the Moonen 100 Explorer features a good deal of attention paid to sound and vibration attenuation. The interior “floats” on vibration-damping materials, a common construction technique. As for that interior, the master and just two guest staterooms are all on the lower deck. One guest stateroom has twins and a pullman, while the other has a double bed. While a total of four staterooms is typically the norm aboard a 100-footer, the owners preferred more elbowroom for friends and family. They certainly get it themselves, too, in a full-beam stateroom.
Four crewmembers will keep the Moonen 100 Explorer moving, so for them and their working needs, there are extra stowage spaces throughout the megayacht. Space is always at a premium aboard any vessel, so some areas do double duty. One of the crew cabins, for example, also contains the washer and dryer.
Creature comforts aboard the yacht include a sauna in the lazarette, sunning space fore and aft on the flying bridge, and dedicated toy stowage on the flying bridge as well.
Look for the Moonen 100 Explorer to be delivered in a few weeks.
