Given the growing popularity of catamarans, more yacht builders are exploring options. Kingship is among them, and the KingCat 80 is its first venture into this marketplace, commissioned from Ivan Erdevicki.
Kingship requested Erdevicki to keep the design clean and simple. The builder also wanted the KingCat 80 to incorporate features megayacht owners expect—and ones typically found on large megayachts. The beamy stance of the catamaran makes this latter goal possible. The 79’4” (24.2-meter) KingCat 80 spans 31 feet (9.45 meters) wide, after all. In addition, the waterline length uses all but about three feet (one meter) of the LOA. This is partly thanks to the plumb bows.
So what are some of those big-yacht features? The all-aluminum KingCat 80 offers a main-deck owner’s suite fully forward, with wrap-around windows. The suite further has direct access to the alfresco space forward. It can be arranged however you wish. Many catamarans in this size range situate an intimate seating/breakfast/cocktail area here, but you could make it a sunning area. You can also invite your guests, eight in total (accommodated in two staterooms in the port hull and two in the starboard hull), to join you, given the walk-around side decks. Regardless, the master can occupy the forward area because the KingCat 80 has a flying-bridge helm. Some of you might like to take the wheel yourself. If not, Kingship and Erdevicki plan one crew cabin for two people.
Still on the subject of the flying bridge, the KingCat 80 offers flexibility. You can either enclose the teak-laid deck area or keep it open. In the open configuration (above), a fixed hardtop extends forward for welcome shade. Sun worshippers have lounges, sunpads, and a hot tub, all aft, at their disposal. A grill will encourage guests aboard the KingCat 80 to enjoy most of the day up here. In the enclosed flybridge version (below), there are panoramic views and sliding glass doors to the aft deck. That alfresco area will still have a hot tub. The KingCat 80 enclosed bridge will further have an internal stairway for access plus a stairway from the main aft deck.
Another welcome layout feature: a beach club, which is rare aboard any yacht in this size range. The KingCat 80 can treat guests to this feature when the tender is offloaded and furnishings are set up on the fixed swim platform. Further noteworthy aboard the KingCat 80: a main-deck galley with an adjacent bar, and glass hatches in the deck to brighten the below-deck relaxation spaces. Those same spaces will benefit from headroom exceeding 6’6″ (2 meters). Erdevicki and Kingship will re-arrange rooms as buyers so wish, as long as they don’t impact structural bulkheads aboard the KingCat 80.
The KingCat 80, with a shallow 3’5” (1.07-meter) draft, should make quick work of island-hopping. Twin diesels coupled to waterjets are expected to let the megayacht cruise at 23 knots at 85-percent load. (On a side note, many builders and designers give cruise speed at half load or light load.) Top end should be 28 knots.
