Dörries Maritime Services is extending its services across the Atlantic. The German firm plans to offer American megayacht owners and buyers its consultation and yacht-management assistance, plus new construction of megayachts like the one shown at its soon-to-open shipyard.
You may recall that Dörries Maritime Services is closely tied to the 269-foot (82-meter) megayacht Graceful, being finished at Blohm+Voss. Outside of that project, however, the firm may not be familiar. Family-owned and operated, Dörries Maritime Services traces its roots to 1987. That’s when Werner Dörries, the current managing director, started an engineering company in Bremen, Germany. Increasingly, he began providing technical consultation and managing new builds. Among the projects he contributed to: Al Salamah and Kismet, both built by Lürssen. In 2009, Dörries officially changed the company’s name to Dörries Maritime Services to reflect the expanded specialties.
Further expansion occurred this past spring. That’s when Dörries Maritime Services began a concentrated effort to promote itself throughout Europe. It opened a sales and marketing office in Monaco in the process, run by Cristian Schwarzwälder. Schwarzwälder’s experience in the megayacht market includes time at Benetti and Blohm+Voss. Expansion occurred once again in August, with the creation of Dörries Yachts, an independent megayacht yard in Germany. At the just-concluded Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, the Dörries Maritime Services team—further including Werner’s son Henning as a project manager—promoted itself to build upon momentum it said occurred at the Monaco Yacht Show.
Currently, Dörries Maritime Services is looking for office space stateside to better serve American clients. That same office will represent Dörries Yachts, which will focus on the 164- to 230-foot (50- to 70-meter) megayacht range. As Werner Dörries explains, among Northern European builders, only the Dutch still target those LOAs. Both traditional and expedition-style megayachts will be offered with pre-engineered platforms “to start the conversations,” he adds. Having engineering completed in advance saves build time, of course, but Dörries Yachts will still customize the megayachts from there.
The first pre-engineered megayacht design being offered is a 279-footer (85-meter). She’s penned by H2 Yacht Design, based largely on its work for Graceful. Also being offered is a 190-foot (58-meter) megayacht by the same design team, shown at top.
