Crewmembers aren’t the only ones interested in engine-room operations. Plenty of tech-oriented and just plain curious megayacht owners and guests are, too. Oculus Technologies is the first company to formally recognize this, via its Engine Room App.
The Netherlands-based Oculus Technologies is the company behind the popular YachtEye software products. YachtEye, found aboard many megayachts, allows guests and crew to call up yacht-specific infotainment. This includes a yacht’s current position, tender or helicopter location, and even upcoming shore-based activities. So, it’s only natural that Oculus Technologies has extended the yacht-specific concept to the “heart” of the vessel herself.
The Oculus Technologies Engine Room App provides a 3D model of the machinery space. It includes the powerplants, watermakers, gensets, and more, as well as each system’s moving parts. The Engine Room App shows everything in real time, too. Therefore, not only can you learn how the propulsion works, for example, but also you can see usage data. The Engine Room App is interactive, letting you explore as in-depth as you wish. Oculus Technologies likens the graphics to those seen in movies like Iron Man and Minority Report, where the major characters used touchscreens for a variety of high-tech data. The Engine Room App provides great information for little engineers-in-training, plus inquisitive adults.
Oculus Technologies can provide the Engine Room App as a stand-alone product. If you have the YachtEye products onboard, it can work in conjunction with them, too. Either way, the Engine Room App is customized for your yacht. It’s already aboard one unnamed megayacht, with further discussions ongoing, according to the company.
