To address the balance between guest privacy and the crew’s ability to cater to needs, Van Berge Henegouwen (VBH) is offering the Ming steward-call system. It works in conjunction with VBH’s other tech-oriented call products.
A number of companies offer similar systems, many operated via iPads or other tablets. VBH employs those units, too, but says its systems have a greater range of options and versatility. All, of course, can also be customized. For example, if your crew offers a specialty cocktail, a dedicated touch-screen button can be created. Towel goes into the hot tub? Another button alerts the crew to bring more.
The VBH Ming steward-call system isn’t meant to replace the tablet system. Rather, it’s a complement to it, used in conjunction if so desired. For example, the Ming can be placed with one group of seating in a large room that has a handful of groupings. It’s less obtrusive than multiple tablets. It’s also more convenient for someone who might have difficulty getting around. By the same token, the Ming can sit in a stateroom, at a bedside.
Furthermore, VBH programs the Ming steward-call system for a specific room and a specific meaning. (The tablet systems operate via wifi, so they work seamlessly from room to room.) VBH will review your needs with you and your crew, then ensure the Ming’s dedicated app, available for Apple and Android products, is set up accordingly. The system is intuitive, too. Just press the large button on top of the Ming, and the appropriate crewmember is alerted.
Given the design, the Ming can sit discreetly in even the most formal saloon or stateroom. It measures 2.2 by 2.3 inches (56 by 58 mm). The cylindrical base is crafted of metal—your choice. Chrome, platinum, ruthemium, and gold plating are all available. It’s then wrapped, again by your choice, in leather or fabric. Further customization, including LEDs as shown, is also possible.
VBH can ship the Ming within approximately six weeks of order. Prices exclude VAT and vary according to metal and decorative choices. For reference purposes, the version that VBH calls “The Original,” chrome-plated and wrapped with black leather, is €1,699 (about US$2,313 at press time). The “Bespoke Programme” Ming button, with platinum plating and leather you supply, is €2,499 (about US$3,402 at press time). Docking stations and power-supply accessories are separate.
