Next month, Wajer & Wajer Yachts will take its flagship Osprey 38 sportboat, a popular tender option, to U.S. shores for the first time. It’s in conjunction with the opening of Wajer Americas, the Dutch builder’s first stateside sales office. That office is part of Sanlorenzo of the Americas.
The family-owned and -operated Wajer & Wajer Yachts was established in The Netherlands nearly 23 years ago by Dorus Wajer, who still oversees it today. The yard focuses on swift sportboats, some capable of speeds exceeding 40 knots. Wajer & Wajer offers four models besides the above-mentioned Osprey 38: the Captain’s Launch, the Zeelander, and the Osprey 37 and 34. (Note: The Zeelander is not the same as the brand Zeelander Yachts.) All except the Captain’s Launch are designed by Vripack. The Captain’s Launch is an entirely in-house creation.
Until now, Wajer & Wajer’s marketing and sales efforts have been focused in Europe and Asia. The Yacht & Brokerage Show in Miami will see the stateside debut of the Osprey 38. This 37-footer has a beam of 12 feet and draft of 2’10”. Equally important, the Osprey 38’s air draft of about 7’4” means it should fit in most tender garages.
The Osprey 38 is ideal for taking guests to and from the dock out to an anchorage, or just a spin around the harbor. Stairs on centerline aft, along with a fold-out gangway, make boarding easy. Seating for up to 24 people rims both sides of the boat. Sunpads aft and on the foredeck allow the boat to serve more than simple shuttle purposes. A cozy interior lets you escape the sun when you wish.
The all-fiberglass Osprey 38 promises speeds from 35 to 45 knots, depending on engine package. The standard engines are twin Volvo Penta IPS350s. Twin IPS500s and IPS600s are optional. IPS engines are proven to consume 30 percent less fuel and emit 30 percent lower carbon dioxide emissions, plus be 50 percent quieter than conventional shaft inboards. Wajer & Wajer says the Osprey 38 consumes 15.9 gph (60 lph) when powered by the IPS500s, for example. The boat comes with a 280-gallon tank.
