It’s common to hear of fathers and sons working together in shipyards. So, knowing the M50 Aria from Mondomarine was designed by a father and son makes her all the more special. The father is the famous designer Giorgio Vafiadis, and his son is Stefano Inglese Vafiadis, both of Giorgio Vafiadis & Associates.
While the two conceived the yacht to welcome warm-weather breezes through as many interior areas as possible, the younger Vafiadis gets full credit for the exterior styling of the M50 Aria, measuring 161’4” (49.2 meters). Note the cut-out-like structures fully aft, as seen flanking the beach club. Even when the swim platform is folded back up to close the transom, those openings remain. Stefano Vafiadis asserts that the bulwark resulting from the closed platform makes the M50 Aria safer. He further asserts that the M50 Aria doesn’t suffer from a lack of a full-beam beach club, which is so often the norm today, due to the open nature of the overall design.
Open, flowing spaces characterize the upper deck, too. Take a close look at the rendering below, and you’ll see smoked-glass panels flanking a dining table, which has unobstructed views aft due to the lack of an enclosure. Those panels can slide into place to protect against the elements, and if it’s chilly, the room can be air conditioned. Alternately, they can slide fully open to make the upper deck a nearly entirely alfresco area. Mondomarine considers this a “veranda lounge,” an apt description.
Multiple configurations are available for interior spaces, also thanks to Stefano Vafiadis and his team. Of course, the interior can be designed by the studio of your choice. Six staterooms should suit most interested buyers, though Stefano Vafiadis says seven are also possible. One arrangement includes an upper-deck VIP stateroom. The master suite can go forward on the main deck and include a gym and balcony. It will therefore make the most of the 29’5” (9-meter) beam. Additional choices: a captain’s cabin on the bridge deck or below decks, a below-deck galley, and a cinema.
To be built entirely of aluminum and meet RINA classification standards, the M50 Aria should see a 19-knot cruising speed and best range of 3,500 nautical miles at 12 knots under MTU power. The 8’5” (2.6-meter) draft is well-suited to a number of popular cruising spots. She’ll remain beneath the 500-gross-ton threshold, too.
