Regatta enthusiasts and Wally owners, take note: Galateia intends to give competitors the proverbial run for their money starting this winter in the Caribbean. The newest Wallycento recently hit the water and is undergoing sea trials.
Measuring 99’10” (30.48 meters) with a beam of 23’6” (7.2 meters), Galateia is similar to the two previous Wallycento deliveries in that she will mix racing with private cruising. And, since she was built to the Wallycento box-rule parameters, she especially emphasizes swift performance and maneuverability in a variety of conditions.
The owners of Galateia were impressed by another Wallycento, Magic Carpet3, so much so that they tapped the same design team for their project. Reichel Pugh Yacht Design served as naval architect, with Wally responsible for styling. Reichel Pugh made hull changes based on new technical studies and the performance of Magic Carpet3. (Magic Carpet3 took the 2014 Wally Annual Trophy and the 2015 Giraglia Rolex Cup.) “All areas of the design were open for development, with focus on improving the underwater foil package, reducing windage and improving the yacht’s systems, weight, and function,” explains Jim Pugh of the design studio. “A critical emphasis was on providing a responsive and rewarding experience for the helmsperson with a reassuring feeling of stability and control especially in more arduous wind and sea conditions.” Galateia carries a 6,889-square-foot (640-square-meter) sailplan.
When Galateia is cruising with her owners’ family, she’ll accommodate six people overnight, though 10 can gather for cocktails and more in the amidship cockpit. They can also enjoy a sunning spot aft. Wally worked with the owners for the layout and interior design. The owner’s stateroom is fully forward below deck, accompanied by two double cabins. A double crew’s cabin is aboard, too. There’s also a tender garage aft on Galateia.
