An old song asks, what are you doing New Year’s Eve? If you’re like many megayacht owners and guests, you’ll be in the Caribbean. And, whether you’re on a yacht or not, you’ll likely have a cocktail in hand. In this spirit (pun intended), we asked Jonathan Pogash (left), owner of The Cocktail Guru, for recipes ripe for ringing in the new year. Pogash provides certified training in spirits, cocktails, mixology, and wine worldwide for megayacht crew. He does so via The Cocktail Guru as well as Maritime Professional Training in Fort Lauderdale.
The three cocktail recipes below are inspired by the Caribbean, staying healthy in the new year, and equally important, staying “hangover-free” after New Year’s Eve celebrations.
Punchy Passion (pictured at top)
½ oz. passion fruit concentrate (Pogash recommends The Perfect Puree of Napa Valley)
½ oz. banana liqueur
1 oz. fresh pineapple juice
1 oz. rhum agricole (cane juice rum)
1 oz. sparkling wine
METHOD: Shake first four ingredients very well with ice and strain into a champagne flute or on the rocks into a punch glass. Top off with sparkling wine.
GARNISH: pineapple slice on rim of glass.
Pomegranate Fizz
1½ ounces Van Gogh pomegranate vodka
½ ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice
¾ ounce simple syrup
1 egg white
1½ ounces pomegranate juice
1 oz. lemon-lime soda
Directions:
Shake the egg white, vodka, simple syrup, and lemon juice without ice. Then add ice and remaining ingredients; shake well. Strain into Collins glass without ice, and top with soda. Garnish with freshly grated nutmeg and lemon peel.
Health tip:
Pomegranates are a great source of antioxidants, and egg whites add necessary proteins to your body.
Bloody Scott
3 ounces smoky single malt Scotch whisky (Pogash likes Ardbeg or Laphroiag)
24 ounces tomato juice
24 ounces V-8 cocktail juice
1 cup ketchup
3 pinches sea salt
3/4 cup of lime mix (equal parts fresh lime and simple syrup)
9 dashes (pours) Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon Morrocan pepper (ground white pepper is a good substitute)
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
4 pinches of Cayenne pepper
Directions:
Mix ingredients together, stirring often. Chill for at least 24 hours before serving.
For 1 serving:
Add 1½ ounce smoky single malt Scotch whisky to a highball glass with ice, and top with bloody mix. Stir briefly.
Garnish with olives and a lime wedge.
Health tip:
All of these ingredients will replenish various things that may have been lost in your body after a night of drinking.
