Even with the Zika virus in the news seemingly on a daily basis, Caribbean megayacht charters and private cruises aren’t declining, thankfully. But, the results of a recent survey should make guests and owners sit up and take notice. Ipsos Global Advisory, a market-research firm, finds that only 15 percent of travelers assess the quality of health-care services in the regions they plan to visit. On another note, it finds that less than half research crime and security in those same regions. These issues led MedAire, which provides health and safety services for yacht guests and crew, to create a travel risk map.
Since 2010, MedAire has been producing a health risk map. This year it added security risks to make the data more well-rounded. It says the travel risk map is the first to combine both categories. Andrew Nicholson, MedAire’s global security director, explains, “Education and information—as well as training—are vital to helping passengers and crewmembers assess and mitigate travel and safety risks. Our comprehensive overview reveals that in 75 percent of countries, the medical risk is assessed to be at a different level from the travel security risk. This range within individual countries highlights the complexities travelers face when preparing to travel abroad.”
Available both for download and in an interactive digital version, the travel risk map reveals medical and travel safety risks country by country. Medical risks are classified as Low, Medium, High, Very High, or Rapidly Developing Variable Risk. Security risks are rated as Insignificant, Low, Medium, High, or Extreme. Note that some countries have variable security risks within their borders. Examples include Mexico and India.
You can download the MedAire travel risk map directly from MedAire. The interactive digital version, meanwhile, lets you drill down to specific areas within countries flagged for having higher risks.
