You’re looking at the huge hull molds for Hull 1015, a super-size sportfisherman being built at Yachting Developments.
We first told you about Hull 1015 last year, shortly after the contract was signed. While it is unusual for a sportfisherman to be this large—126’10”, or 38.7 meters—what’s really unusual about her is her construction material. She’s being built entirely of carbon fiber composite. Come delivery in 2017, she’ll rank as the world’s largest carbon fiber sportfisherman.
Lamination work on Hull 1015 began just recently. Yachting Developments still can’t reveal much about the project. But, the owner selected the shipyard for two reasons. First, he knew about another sportfisherman that had been completed there. She’s Satu, a 90-footer (27.4-meter) handed over in 2012. (Work started on Satu at another yard.) Second, the owner was struck by the New Zealand yard’s familiarity with carbon fiber composite.
The owner also selected Michael Peters Yacht Design for the hull design for good reason. The American studio has a strong reputation for performance-oriented craft. If you’ve seen sportfishermen in action, then you know they need to be quite maneuverable and quick when backing down on big fish.
It will be a few more months before Hull 1015 gets her superstructure put in place. In the meantime, Yachting Developments is readying Hull 1012 for launch next month. She’s a 110’6” (33.7-meter) sloop. And, a lengthy refit continues on Windhaven, a 69’9” (21.3-meter) classic built in 1948. The sailing yacht was taken to Yachting Developments nearly three years ago, for extensive work.
