One month from now, the second Darwin Class 102 is set to splash at Cantiere delle Marche. She’s Babbo, and as her model name hints, she’s set to show how the fit survive.
A true expedition yacht, Babbo is meant for oceanic explorations. Cantiere delle Marche has earned a reputation for delivering sea-tackling yachts. Notably, there’s Percheron, which has crossed the Atlantic twice and encountered strong storms. Acala, the first Darwin Class 102, crossed the Atlantic upon delivery last year. Overall, Darwin Class yachts like Babbo are engineered to withstand 50-knot-plus winds and 21-foot (6.5-meter) seas. She’s expected to see a 4,700-nautical-mile range at 9½ knots under Caterpillar power, too.
The three-deck Babbo will welcome big groups aboard for cruises. They’ll particularly enjoy diving, since she’s set up with bottles and related gear in her garage. (That garage, by the way, encompasses nearly 269 square feet, or 25 square meters.) A tender housed on the swim platform may come in handy for dive trips. Another tender might, too, stowed on the upper deck.
We’ll have to wait a little longer to learn about interior-design details. For now, Cantiere delle Marche will simply say that it was a multi-national collaboration. The owner tapped Simon Hamui, a Mexico City-based designer and creator of furnishings. PFA & Partners, an Italian studio which has worked on a few previous Cantiere delle Marche deliveries, handled the general arrangement and oversight of all work.
You’ll get a chance to see Babbo at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September.
