The 35th America’s Cup next June will see spectacular racing among not just foiling catamarans, but also sailing superyachts. The America’s Cup Superyacht Regatta is joining the official lineup of events in Bermuda’s waters.
Taking place from June 13 to 15, the America’s Cup Superyacht Regatta will actually precede the official America’s Cup match. All power and sailing yachts measuring 78 feet (24 meters) and larger are eligible to compete. The program will be similar to the one held during the last America’s Cup race in San Francisco in 2013. Back then, the Pendennis-built Adela secured the America’s Cup Superyacht Regatta trophy. She won over a number of other well-known yachts. They include the classic America and the modern builds Adele (by Vitters Shipyard), Athena (by Royal Huisman), and Chrisco (by CNB).
Also joining the upcoming competition are the J-Class yachts. A Js-only race has already been in the works for the America’s Cup since 2015. At that time, the J-Class Association expected eight Js to participate. If all eight race next year, it will be historic. The last time eight Js sailed against each other: 1934. (The eight currently afloat are Endeavour, Hanuman, Lionheart, Rainbow, Ranger, Shamrock V, Topaz, and Velsheda.)
The Royal Bermuda Yacht Club is among the co-hosts for the superyacht regatta. Leatrice Oatley, commodore of the yacht club, says, “We understand the tremendous opportunity the America’s Cup is bringing to the island and are thrilled to be adding this event to our legacy of promoting the sport in Bermuda.”
The entry fee for the race is $10,000. An additional $1,100 is required of entrants that are not currently members of the Superyacht Racing Association, which will govern the race. Owners, guests, and crew of the competing yachts get to enjoy on-land activities, too. To learn more about the overall regatta, download the America’s Cup Superyacht Regatta Notice of Race.
