What’s that you say? It’s not even Thanksgiving yet? True. But also true, Caribbean cruising spots book up quickly for the holidays. So, if you plan to take your own yacht south or charter there, some prime berths and dates are already gone. In fact, St. Barts is so popular for New Year’s Eve that yachts started securing spots a year ago. One place you can still access, though, is Grenada—specifically, Port Louis Marina.
Nicknamed the Spice Isle for the abundance of nutmeg and other seasonings growing there, Grenada retains natural, unspoiled beauty. There’s far less development than on other islands, a significant attraction for a number of yacht owners and guests. Port Louis Marina is across the water from the capital of St. George’s, close enough for convenience yet far enough for serenity.
This doesn’t mean, however, that New Year’s Eve is a snooze. Port Louis Marina hosts quite a party, at its Victory Bar & Restaurant. The all-inclusive event kicks off with well-known Caribbean DJs. They include DJ Stephen, a.k.a. “Red Dread,” from Trinidad & Tobago, plus DJ Puffy from Barbados. Home-grown talent isn’t left out of the mix. DJs Blackstorm and Turbo are set to perform. So, too, will a number of local artists.
All performances take place on a main stage. Bars surround it, for convenience. Surely, though, you’ll want to enjoy the sights and sounds from the VIP area poolside. You VIPs will get to toast at midnight with Veuve Clicquot champagne, too.
Of course, what would a New Year’s Eve celebration be without fireworks? Port Louis Marina will set off a show at the stroke of midnight.
As for what to do the next day, well, you have plenty of options. Explore Grenada’s famous rainforest. (Don’t miss the chance to hand a monkey a banana.) Swim in the island’s waterfalls, or walk along beautiful Grande Anse beach. Stroll through St. George’s. Or simply schedule your return visit to Port Louis Marina. With billfish tournaments, chocolate festivals, and more in Grenada throughout the year, you’ll have good reasons.
