Perini Navi and its sister shipyard, Picchiotti, are getting capital injections from a new investor. Simultaneously, Lamberto Tacoli (below), the longtime yachting executive, now runs the Perini Navi Group.
Faber Group, the holding company for the yards and owned by Perini Navi founder Fabio Perini, retains majority ownership. However, its stake is now 50.01 percent. It sold 49.99 percent to Fenix, a company that brought €27 million (about $29.3 million) to the table. Fenix, a family-run company, focuses on eyewear. The family behind the firm is father Dino Tabacchi and son Edoardo Tabacchi. The younger Tabacchi is no stranger to yachting, by the way. He’s christened two megayachts Blue Eyes. The most recent: a 197-footer from CRN in 2009.
Speaking of CRN, Tacoli is best known for his roles as CEO and chairman there in recent years. He served as chairman from 2006 to 2016. He additionally became CEO in 2012. Furthermore, Tacoli has headed Nautica Italiana since early last year. Fifty 50 companies, from shipyards to suppliers, comprise the association, which promotes the “made in Italy” concept.
At a press conference today announcing Fenix’s stake and his own appointment, Tacoli said, “I did not look for a job, but I was looking for a home.”
Edoardo Tabacchi and Fabio Boschi, who was most recently president of Perini Navi, are now each vice presidents of Perini Navi Group. Tabacchi mentioned the complementary family-run aspects during the press conference. “Two great families command a top brand of made in Italy,” he said. He added, “Meeting Fabio Perini, whom I have no doubt is the most important inventor in the nautical sector, was the beginning of an extraordinary adventure which I am sure will endure well into the future.” (Fabio Perini established a company in 1966 specializing in paper-cutting machinery and acquired patents for the equipment. He sold the business in the 1990s to establish Perini Navi.)
“I’ve known the Tabacchi family for a long time and hold them in high regard,” comments Fabio Perini. “I am extremely happy to share with Edoardo the future of Perini Navi.” Fabio Perini is remaining as honorary president of the group.
