Semi-custom shipyards let owners select interior designers of their choice. Most pick superyacht studios, but the owners of the new Sanlorenzo Kathleen parted with that tradition. They chose Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel & Partners, known for architectural, interior, and urban design.
Kathleen is a Sanlorenzo SD112, the mid-size model of the SD (semi-displacement) series. Other Sanlorenzo buyers have brought in high-profile designers. But, Kathleen marks the first time that the Citterio-Viel team have collaborated with Sanlorenzo. The design studio has an impressive resume, including a number of residences and architectural locations. These include the Milan headquarters of the renowned fashion brand Ermenegildo Zegna. They also include the Qatar Airways premium passenger lounges and check-in areas at Hamad International Airport in Doha, Qatar.
For Kathleen, the designers brought in a relaxed residential feel. It blends the Scottish owners’ wishes with the structural and technical requirements that Sanlorenzo outlined. The effect is especially evident in the saloon (above). The stairway connecting the yacht’s three decks received attention as well. It spirals through Kathleen and picks up the wood details seen underfoot in the saloon and overhead on the aft deck. The tones and textures seen in the saloon repeat throughout all guest areas aboard.
Some aspects of Kathleen remain the same as those aboard other Sanlorenzo SD112s, however. These include the main-deck master stateroom. Here, the bed faces the ports overlooking the bow. A long seating area sits directly beneath those ports, too. In the saloon, sliding glass doors to each side lead out to fold-down balconies. Four guest staterooms sit below decks. Overall, Kathleen has accommodations for 10 in the owners’ party and five crewmembers. Top speed should also be about 17 knots, under MTU power.
While Kathleen was handed over a few weeks ago, this isn’t the last time that the Citterio-Viel design studio and Sanlorenzo will join forces. The designers have another project in the works at the shipyard. She’s an Exp460, the explorer-styled series. That yacht’s owner hails from Switzerland.
