Though it’s hard to fathom for most of us who remember the year as clear as day, a megayacht launched in 1991 is considered in some circles to be a classic. That’s also how Amels refers to the yacht that recently completed an extensive refit at its facility.
Amels has never mentioned the yacht by name, but it was Alwaeli, pictured here. She arrived at the yard for what was originally planned to be a machinery and systems overhaul as well as interior décor changes and a restyled exterior. But when work was about halfway completed, Amels says, the owners requested additional work, which extended the timeframe to 18 months.
Some of the tasks performed included reinforcing hull scantlings to allow the installation of zero-speed stabilizers, something the nearly 20-year-old, CRN-built yacht didn’t have. The sundeck was also redesigned to accommodate an elevator (which connects all the decks), a new sunbathing area, a shaded dining area, a Jacuzzi, and teak decking underfoot. The crew cabins and interior gathering areas received updated looks, too, though no specifics were revealed, although Amels does say that new entertainment and IT systems were installed throughout the yacht.
If the owners’ rep’s reaction is any indication, then they are quite pleased with Alwaeli’s new lease on life: “I am extremely happy with the work, which was carried out to the highest possible standards,” says Jim Alabaster. “I am also impressed with the skills of the people involved. The refit managers were exemplary in making sure that the work was done as planned, and as promised–on time and on budget.”
