In just a few more days, Big Fish will depart New Zealand for Tahiti and the start of her polar navigation – the first yacht ever to undertake such passage.
But first, her management and build team from Aquos Yachts wanted to throw one heckuva party.
Actually, there were several celebrations. You may have heard of or even attended some yacht launches where priests or other religious figures bless a boat. In the case of this 45-meter (147’7″) megayacht, 15 Buddhist monks bestowed a blessing on May 21. The date was significant, as it’s Buddha’s birthday on the Chinese calendar (so chosen because of the owners’ residency in Hong Kong). Later that evening, and again the night after, Big Fish was fetted with a laser light show in Auckland Harbor. Also on both evenings, dozens of family and friends were invited to see traditional Maori Haka dancers perform and listen to live music. And finally, the craftsmen of McMullen & Wing, where Big Fish was built, were invited to take their families to an all-day party.
Here’s an exclusive slideshow showcasing the blessing and light show.
