When the Blohm+Voss BV80 was initially teased last month, the semi-custom megayacht got people’s attention. Now that full details are available, the 262-foot (80-meter) yacht should attract plenty more interest.
The Blohm+Voss BV80 is notable for being the first semi-custom megayacht among all the yachts the German yard has built since 1900. (The company actually dates to 1877, constructing ships at first.) If you’re surprised by the move, there’s some strong logic to it. Plenty of megayacht buyers are more concerned with outlining where they and their guests want to spend their time, versus specifying technical systems, crew’s quarters, and related factors. They have no qualms about a shipyard pre-setting these.
The Blohm+Voss BV80 is a nod to current trends in other ways. The shipyard tapped Eidsgaard Design, a rising name in yachting circles. The team envisions metallic paint, in contrasting white and gray, for the superstructure. It’s further calling for some of the large ports to be rimmed in a burgundy tone. Should you want a more dramatic profile, Eidsgaard Design has several other overall color options for the BV80. Just be sure to preserve the “waterfall” effect aft (above). Ribbed sections cascade down the central portion of the yacht, starting at the mast.
Inside, the build and design teams have a number of suggestions. The Blohm+Voss BV80 has fixed locations for the owner’s suite and guest staterooms, though their layouts can change. For example, the master can have two dressing areas, two baths, and an office. Opt instead for a staff cabin or nursery to occupy some space, adjacent. Also on the owner’s deck, one level above the main deck, you can have a private dining area, with a handy pantry. Or, replace the dining area with a bar-equipped lounge or a VIP stateroom. The Blohm+Voss BV80 situates six guest staterooms on the main deck as standard, available as doubles, twins, and with pullmans. Want flexibility? Have one pair, even two pairs, of adjacent staterooms become suites instead, with large private sitting rooms.
With nearly 42 feet (12.8 meters) of beam, the Blohm+Voss BV80 does not suffer lack of other amenities. The beach club (above) can have lounging areas and a spa. It can also be a tender-boarding and -arrival area, or a devoted dive and watersports center. Each alfresco area has enough space for loose furnishings suitable for dining or sunning, or both. A hot tub forward of the mast on the sundeck can complement the main aft-deck pool. Just aft of the mast, the Blohm+Voss BV80 can feature open-air dining and relaxation or a year-round enclosed garden.
Because the Blohm+Voss BV80 is being actively promoted as a build project, performance calculations have already been made. The yard expects a cruising speed of 16 knots and a range of 6,000 nautical miles at 12 knots. The 2,300-gross-ton yacht should draw about 12 feet (3.7 meters) as well. Twenty-three crew will see to operations going smoothly.
