Super-size superyachts tend to get the most media attention. But “small” superyachts are sometimes equally as newsworthy. An 89-footer (27-meter) in build at Van der Valk Continental Yachts is a good example. She’s part of the Continental Two series from the Dutch shipyard. But, she has a handful of customized touches, from propulsion package to hull configuration, that set her apart.
For one, this Continental Two is the first Van der Valk build to employ the new MAN V12-1900 engines. More important, she’s the first all-aluminum yacht anywhere to have them. What’s so special about these MAN engines? They’re the most powerful high-speed four-stroke diesels that the manufacturer has ever made. They were created specifically for the 100-foot-plus megayacht market, in a compact size customary for the brand. And, they deliver 1,900 hp while burning the same amount of fuel as the 1800-hp MAN V12-1800 engines.
Surely the experienced owner of this Continental Two appreciates these facts as much as other details he requested. They include a bulbous bow. Van der Valk Continental Yachts does not normally incorporate this on the Continental Two series. (The series, by the way, features naval architecture by Ginton Naval Architects and styling by Guido de Groot Design.) The hull is a fast-displacement design, so performance should be enhanced even further by the bulbous bow.
Come springtime 2017, the owner will put a “groovy leisure zone” (the yard’s words) to use. It’s up on the flying bridge, where the tender usually goes. The owner freed up the space by relocating the tender to a big swim platform. This suits his Continental Two yacht due to the lazarette holding tons of toys, plus dive gear. The fab flybridge is complemented by a foredeck hang-out area, for sunning and sitting.
Twenty-two feet (6.72 meters) of beam will make the interior welcoming, too. Six guests get to come along for the ride. Just two crewmembers should be needed for overnight travels as well.
