Less than two months after the yachting world learned the first coupé in Sanlorenzo’s history was in build, the megayacht is in the water. Almax, owned by a repeat client, is officially the first Sanlorenzo SP110.
The 108-foot (33-meter) SP110 series combines some sporty, swift looks of coupés (a.k.a. maxi opens) with lower fuel burn, plus more creature comforts. In fact, Sanlorenzo says the “SP” in the series name means Smart Performance. Marco Arnaboldi of Studio Arnaboldi designed the hull for use with waterjet propulsion, plus to save weight. As the first SP110, Almax employs carbon composite materials for her hull and her deck. “The goal was to contain weight as much as possible, without obviously compromising the strength and durability of the structure,” Arnaboldi says.
As for the waterjet propulsion, Almax couples them to triple 2,000-hp MANs. The MANs are lower horsepower than you typically find for a superyacht expected to top out at 40 knots, too. On a related note, Sanlorenzo expects SP110 customers to use the propulsion package versatilely—relying on just two engines, for instance. Additionally, the shipyard has equipped the yacht with a battery bank and solar panels for less reliance on gensets.
More research went into other ways of saving weight, too. For instance, the large glass windows—covering nearly 80 percent of Almax—are lighter than you might expect. Overall, Arnaboldi explains, “There is a lot of talk about sustainability and fuel savings: the lightness resulting from effectively processing and applying the new materials available to us contributes to drastically reducing CO2 per mile production.”
Although the launch photo doesn’t reveal it, the color of the windows matches the hull color. This gives the illusion of continuity. It doesn’t impede the views from inside, though, where the 26-foot (8-meter) beam makes Alamax feel voluminous. Aiding even further: a two-level interior with an atrium arrangement aft, from Lissoni & Partners.
Look for this Sanlorenzo SP110 to make her global debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September.
