Concerns over Legionella, the bacteria that causes Legionnaires’ disease, have shut down resorts and public buildings in recent weeks. Although there isn’t widespread evidence of it in yachting, a superyacht hot tub maintains water temperatures allowing the bacteria to thrive. Clearly, no crew or owners want anyone becoming seriously ill. A Legionella Field Test kit from CMT has made a difference with at least one yacht so far, according to the company.
Generally speaking, water test kits have been on the market for many years. However, they require sending water samples to labs on land. The labs in turn take several days to determine the results. Especially with charter yachts and active private yachts, that’s time that no one has.
By contrast, any crewmember can use CMT’s superyacht hot tub test kit. What’s more, results are available in less than half an hour.
Learn more about the test kits in the February 2025 Megayacht News newsletter. Exclusively for subscribers, our monthly newsletter provides information that you won’t find here on the website. For example, we reveal how superyacht owners’ families and charter guests, especially their children, are increasingly supporting the non-profit Conservation Collective in its efforts to protect sea turtles. They’re doing so in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, with several yachts purposely heading there this winter to assist.
We also share details from a formal accident report following the tragic death of a crewmember last year. Without finger pointing, the report contains reminders that will serve all owners and crew well. Furthermore, the Megayacht News newsletter this month shares news about a highly customized Baglietto project and a new service and refit yard in Gibraltar.
