Any city that has seen its fair share of megayachts pull into port can verify the positive economic impact the owners, their guests, and the crew make. Whether it’s hosting a dockside party at a marina (thereby keeping florists, beverage distributors, and delivery people employed) or even hailing a taxi and venturing into town for dinner and a show (keeping all sorts of Regular Joes and Janes employed), the cruising set has a remarkable ripple effect. Smart city officials and organizations around the globe are waking up to this and making concerted efforts to promote their towns as superb superyacht destinations.
So it’s no wonder, then, that a handful of marine-related companies serving the megayacht market in San Diego have joined together to promote America’s Finest City in this way, forming the San Diego Superyacht Association (SDSA). Specifically, 16 firms ranging from yacht brokerages to marinas and yacht-repair facilities have founded the first such coalition on the West Coast of the USA. They are:
* Fraser Yachts
* Driscoll Boat Works
* Shelter Island Marina
* Knight & Carver YachtCenter
* C2C
* Hawthorne Power Systems
* Honor Marine Electronics
* Kona Kai Marina
* Marine Group Boat Works
* Northrop and Johnson
* Rocket Research
* San Diego Marine Exchange
* Sharp Design
* Valley Power Systems
* Wenthur Law Group
* Pacific Superyacht Promotions/YachtFest San Diego
“With all that San Diego has to offer, industry experts believe our region is in prime position for terrific growth,” says Paul Daubner, a yacht-management specialist with Fraser Yachts and SDSA’s president. “San Diego Superyacht Association’s goal is to work together to successfully promote our assets–world-class tradespeople, companies and services–to the world’s top yacht captains, owners, and yacht management firms.”
The temperate climate only helps bolster the argument: Average monthly temperatures range from about 57°F (14°C) in January to 72°F (22°C) in July. And with plentiful beaches, a well-known zoo, professional baseball and football teams, golf courses, and more, there’s a lot to keep cruisers busy when they wish to step off the dock for a day or night out.
