For the next several months, the 130-foot (39.6-meter) megayacht Magic will be inside the climate-controlled shed at Maine-based Front Street Shipyard. Built by Northern Marine in 2005, Magic changed hands last autumn and is undergoing several significant changes to suit not just the owner but also the charter market.
Front Street Shipyard is increasingly being approached by megayacht owners to perform refits, given that it is one of the few facilities along the East Coast that can do the work on large projects and in a climate-controlled building. The yard, which can also handle new-builds to 200 feet, recently acquired a 485-ton mobile boat hoist (seen above, carrying Magic into the shed) because of the increased demand. To put it into further perspective, Front Street Shipyard has completed eight refits of yachts exceeding 79 feet (24 meters) since 2011, the year it opened its doors.
These are among the reasons why the megayacht’s owner selected Front Street Shipyard for this project. It also helps that Magic’s original designer and designer for the refit, Ward Setzer, has collaborated previously with the yard’s principals.
As for the alterations being made to Magic, the megayacht will have a completely redesigned flying bridge, including the mast and radar arch. The area will feature an outdoor cinema, a day head, more seating, and of course a hot tub. Magic will also gain a foredeck seating area that can convert to a sunning space. Sure to further please the owner and guests: a bigger, beach-club-like platform for boarding toys, jumping into the water, diving, and more. It will be made by Front Street Shipyard’s metal department, of stainless steel, and be hydraulically activated. It will even double as a large passarelle when necessary.
