If you’ll be at the Monaco Yacht Show this week, you can see a scale model of the newest megayacht to start construction at Palmer Johnson, the 35M Carbon Sport. As her name states, she’s constructed of carbon fiber, and as her styling suggests, she’s intended to be distinctly different.
That difference doesn’t just extend to looks—although aesthetically, the 114’8” Palmer Johnson 35M Carbon Sport is at once muscular and forceful. It also encompasses volume and performance. With an anticipated 284 gross tonnage, the megayacht is said to offer 30 percent more volume than similar-size, traditional-styled projects. The Carbon Sport will also fully employ carbon fiber and composite construction, something not yet done in the mega-size motoryacht marketplace. That will keep strength up and weight down, and therefore impact fuel burn. Palmer Johnson hasn’t released anticipated figures yet, but take a close look at the hull, especially aft. There are sponsons. That will certainly boost stability, and if the 35M Carbon Sport is anything like the Palmer Johnson 48M SuperSport under construction right now, they will be accompanied by a wavepiercing bulbous bow, adding to the efficiency. Top end should be 30 knots (though the engine package isn’t revealed), allowing a 750-nautical-mile range at that speed. Even though megayachts rarely run at or close to maximum speed for more than a few minutes, the 850-nautical-mile-range at a slightly slower 27 knots is still respectable. Best range should come at 16 knots: 1,600 nautical miles.
Creature comforts should attract buyers, too. Note the full-height windows on the main deck, the beach club, and the foredeck seating/cocktail area, the latter revealed thanks to a clever pop-up hardtop. Note, too, the views possible to each side from the aft deck, since the superstructure extensions there have cut-outs. Inside, there’s a 355-square-foot (33-square-meter) full-beam owner’s suite, and a 33-foot-long (10-meter-long) saloon that overall occupies 592 square feet (55 square meters). No doubt the aft-deck doors can be left open to make the saloon more of an indoor-outdoor space. Outside, the 36-foot-long (11-meter-long) sundeck offers plenty of elbowroom, given that it’s 678 square feet (63 square meters).
