Since helicopters allow superyacht owners and guests access to areas beyond the vessel’s reach, why can’t other specialty aircraft? The International SeaKeepers Society believes electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) models are the way forward in the near future. The non-profit has partnered with AIR, a manufacturer of eVTOLs for consumers. Together, they’re raising awareness for the AIR ONE electric aircraft, for supporting yachting expeditions.
AIR is among a few companies focused on these electric aircraft. (In fact, the Silent 120 Explorer yacht can come with an eVTOL, from a different manufacturer.) AIR has an advantage over some competitors, though, since it has already flight tested a full-scale prototype. In fact, it occurred last month. This makes the company confident it will deliver the first AIR ONE two-seater electric aircraft units, capable of 155 mph (250 kph), in late 2024. According to a map on AIR’s website, the majority of customers are in the United States.
“The eVTOL is a natural addition to yachting missions,” said Jay Wade, SeaKeepers’ chairman. “AIR ONE specifically is a no-brainer for yachters looking for an environmentally friendly, easy-to-integrate flight option to elevate their yacht experience, literally and figuratively.”
SeaKeepers and AIR believe the AIR ONE electric aircraft simplifies near-shore owner and guest transport in several ways. Superyachts no longer need to have aviation fuel onboard, for instance. Additionally, fewer spare parts need to remain on hand. A helicopter requires a professionally trained pilot, while the AIR eVTOL requires a sport pilot certification, easier to attain. Even though it is already compact, its wings collapse as well. This allows more yachts to carry it versus a helicopter. Nearly any flat surface can serve as the takeoff and landing area, too. The aircraft itself can take off with a 551-pound (250-kilogram) payload. Finally, the electric aircraft can recharge via a yacht’s gensets.
Rani Plaut, AIR’s CEO and co-founder, says his team sees personal electric flight adding value to yachting. “In addition to helping improve yacht logistics, this partnership enables yachters to add an extra layer of sky-high adventure to sea excursions.” Ultimately, he concludes, AIR intends to advance air mobility worldwide.
