“You can sleep on it, fly off of it, and move it,” says Tommy Allen, owner of the newly launched yacht Five Oceans. All of those activities will be in the name of upholding and promoting ocean preservation during global explorations.
Five Oceans is the second hull in the Damen Yachting YS53 series, the first being the yacht Bad Company, which splashed last year. Interestingly, she isn’t Allen’s first yacht. Nor is she his first project from Damen Yachting. In 2018, he and his partner acquired the 220-foot (67-meter) YS 6711 Geo, to explore waters heading inland in areas like Papua New Guinea. “We never viewed it as a ‘yacht,’ in terms of a white yacht,” Allen says. “For us, it was a platform, it was a place to do all the incredible things that we wanted to do.”

Since Damen Yachting permits extensive customization to accompany the set engineering package, Allen took advantage. The yacht Five Oceans has a dive center, for example, along with staterooms for six to seven couples and/or researchers. A Triton Submarines 330 Pro sub will be aboard, too, with modifications for ocean data gathering. All requests, “some admittedly quite elaborate” according to Rob Dolling, founder and CEO of Verpeka Dolling Superyachts, Allen’s yacht project manager, are incorporated.

Everything aboard the 175-footer (53-meter) will support Allen’s goals to crisscross the globe’s oceans over the next three years to gather more data about what lies beneath the ocean’s surface. (The name of the yacht is a reference the globe’s five oceans. Namely, they’re the Pacific, the Atlantic, the Indian, the Arctic and the Southern.) Allen is a master diver, having dived numerous waters already. His company, Five Oceans Global Solutions, uses the latest technology for responsible exploration of ocean depths, simultaneously to uncover the unknown and to protect it.

Jan van Hogerwou, commercial executive at Damen Yachting, has collaborated with Allen since the contract signing. He says the team is honored to help bring Allen’s vision to fruition. “Seeing her out in the open and ready for the final stages of her build before her delivery just a couple of months from now, is the start of something truly exciting,” he notes.
