Speed still sells. Witness Misunderstood, the seventh Mangusta 165 megayacht delivered to date by the Overmarine Group. Misunderstood averaged 35 knots according to her own log during frequent use last summer throughout the Med, out of a possible 40-knot top end. It’s cruising as usual for this triple-MTU-powered yacht (with waterjets, too), whose American owner has had a number of other smaller vessels in recent years. In fact, he has had three previous Mangustas, stepping up in size gradually to this Mangusta 165, the largest all-fiberglass open in the world.
Like those other Mangustas, the Mangusta 165 is a long, sleek megayacht, meant for indulging in sunny shorelines. Therefore, abundant alfresco space is provided. You’ll find a good deal of it on the foredeck, which is dominated by a huge sunpad fully forward and an equally good-size seating/dining spot just aft of it. While the sunpad isn’t visible in this photo, trust us when we say the owner and his family can stretch out and still have room for friends. As for the dining area, it can be arranged according to buyers’ wishes. The owner of Misunderstood requested a bimini as shown, as well as isinglass panels that can be put up for wind protection when needed. In addition, a TV rises up forward, to face the seated guests.
Further open-air relaxation is available on the Mangusta 165’s flying bridge. Lounging takes place on the sunpad, once again quite big, laying fully aft. Plenty of seating lines the starboard side, and sunny or starry-sky dining can take place up here, too. Should the sun become a bit too much, misters embedded in Misunderstood’s radar arch provide relief. The same is true of an awning that extends forward from the arch up to the helm station.
As mentioned above, each Mangusta 165 can be customized, and Misunderstood’s owner took full advantage of that with the outdoor options. Check out this diving board, which extends out from the starboard side of the main deck. It’s hidden from view, stowed within the superstructure when not in use. Whenever someone wants to take a leap, maybe even execute a cannonball, the crew can remove a section of the side rail so that it deploys over the yacht’s side. Alternately, Misunderstood also carries a FreeStyle Cruiser inflatable slide.
Of course, Misunderstood also provides plenty of entertainment options inside. Since the family likes to spend a lot of time together, this TV lounge is a popular spot. It’s located below decks, close to the master suite and guest staterooms. (Aboard other Mangusta 165 megayachts, the space occupied by the cinema is instead simply another stateroom.) Here, whether the whole family is watching a movie together, or the kids are enjoying their favorite cartoons, the comfortable seating lets them spread out. Directly beneath the TV, there are custom-made candy drawers, at the request of the owner, that hold everyone’s favorite snacks, too.

Also below decks, accessible directly from the master suite (right) as well as off the hallway connecting the staterooms, is this gym (left). Again, since the Overmarine Group customizes each Mangusta 165, the layout is open to a lot of input. Misunderstood’s owner preferred just four staterooms, including the master. The gym would therefore easily be another guest stateroom on another yacht, perhaps even an office. Up to six staterooms can be fitted aboard.
Something that owners of all seven Mangustas delivered to date—plus the eighth one sold a few months ago—have in common is an open floorplan on the main deck. You can see straight from the aft-deck doors up to the raised, triple-seat helm area. It’s interesting to note that other Mangusta 165 owners have opted for a glass partition separating the helm and dining area, able to turn opaque at the press of a button, for privacy on both sides. Regardless, between the flowing feel to the space and the high headroom, the 30’2” (9.2-meter) beam is made to feel a lot roomier. The flowing layout makes for a relaxing atmosphere ideal for big get-togethers, similar to one held during the Fort Lauderdale boat show last October, in which nearly 60 people spread out between the saloon and dining area. It still allowed the stewardesses to serve snacks and drinks easily. If a party is to be held while the megayacht is out on the water, other members of the crew can go about their duties outside thanks to full walk-around side decks, something missing from other big open yachts these days.
There’s a lot to like aboard the Mangusta 165 for those of you attracted to speedy yachts meant for harbor-hopping and sun-worshipping. There’s also a lot to be said for the Overmarine Group pricing and delivering each 165 turnkey, including PWCs.
Just make sure you ask about adding the diving board… it would be a shame to have a boring time on the water, after all.
