There are explorer yachts, and then there are explorer yachts. True explorer yachts aren’t just long-range cruisers. They can take on what the oceans throw at them. The rugged yacht Arctic is not only a real explorer, but also the world’s largest explorer superyacht. With decades of global cruising, including Antarctica, under her hull, she’s embarking on a global itinerary next year. First, though, the 287-footer (88-meter) is welcoming equally bold charter guests onboard in Norway—in the winter season.
Norway consistently attracts private yachts and charter yachts, but in summertime. Taking one short look at Arctic, though, and you sense typical excursions aren’t really for her. You’d be right. She started life as an ice-classed salvage tug in 1969. The late Australian media mogul Kerry Packer acquired her and had her converted for leisure, relaunching her in 1994. With the Packer family, the yacht—known as Arctic P—circumnavigated twice. She further visited Antarctica, earning a Guinness World Record as the motoryacht reaching the southernmost point on the globe.

Still in the Packer family hands, and having undergone five more refits, the yacht Arctic is booking Norway charters starting in November. As part of the Ahoy Club fleet, she’ll roam through the fjord. Snow-capped majestic mountains and glaciers are yours for skiing or exploring. Back on deck, however, you have a plethora of activities and amenities to enjoy.
For instance, the heli deck can cater to dance parties or brisk morning yoga sessions. Indulge in the wellness suite, with a massage area, after an invigorating hike. Or, soak in the hot tub or pool, practically at the water’s edge. Enjoy the scenery from the warmth and comfort of any of her lounges, followed by a movie in the cinema at night.
Finally, while her armada of watertoys seems better suited to warm-water destinations, you still have options. For example, the yacht Arctic has space for ROVs or submersibles. Willing to brave the chill in the air? Then set out on the kayaks.
One of the best parts of chartering Arctic this winter: She has an incredibly loyal 28-person crew. Many of them have spent more than a decade aboard—some having hree decades plus of service, in fact. Not only do they know the yacht inside and out, but also they can share stories of some of the best places to visit.
