Late last Friday I received word about a casualty of the currently difficult economic times. The organizer of the Super Yacht Bowl cancelled.
The event, uniting a treasured American tradition and yachting, which I detailed here (and which inspired TheBoaters.tv vidcast today), attracted a lot of interest. A few yacht owners secured dock space, and a yacht christening was coinciding with the variety of events. Those events included a yacht hop and a dinner with NFL alumni.
But, apparently it wasn’t enough. The organizers aren’t the only ones feeling the risk is too great. Apparently some NFL sponsors have scaled back or withdrawn financial support for other events that weekend.
Because the organizers of the Super Yacht Bowl cancelled, owners who reserved slips will receive a refund. Of course, if you’d still like to take your boat to St. Petersburg for the Big Game, the Vinoy Renaissance marina remains available. The two city marinas further have slips available for booking. Super Yacht Bowl’s organizers are continuing to direct inquiries to the dockmasters, in fact.
In the meantime, let’s hope the current economic climate stabilizes soon, even ever so slightly, for all our sakes. There’s too much fear and uncertainty, and it’s not doing anybody any good, no matter what their station in life.
