Considering Ocean Alexander built four of its 90R (“R” standing for “Revolution”) series within the first year of her release, the yacht tapped into unfulfilled desires among buyers. The more voluminous and far more modern-looking design stood apart from the crowd. Simultaneously, she let the builder offer something different without abandoning its roots in more traditional large motoryachts. With the Ocean Alexander 84R, cruisers looking to step up into megayacht territory have a similarly roomy advantage to enjoy, along with additional pleasant surprises.
The yacht comes from the same design duo behind her larger sister. Specifically, Evan K. Marshall penned the styling, and Arrabito Naval Architects handled naval architecture. At a smidge over 83 feet (25.43 meters), she holds an enviable advantage over similar-size popular motoryachts due to a volume of 160 gross tons. One of the best sensations comes in the VIP stateroom. Traditional V-bow yachts tend to pinch usable space in this fully forward stateroom. However, the Ocean Alexander 84R’s plumb bow eliminates the issue. So, too, does the angled berth, positioned on the starboard bulkhead.
Of course, the 20-foot (6.22-meter) beam further makes the Ocean Alexander 84R look and feel capacious. The full-beam master stateroom and open-plan main deck (both photos above) are the main beneficiaries. In a twist, the megayacht shuns the typical country kitchen in favor of an extra light and bright lounging/TV area fully forward. The galley is instead opposite the dining area, a relaxed show kitchen combined with a bar serving the saloon just aft.
While hull number one of the series has a skylounge, the Ocean Alexander 84R alternately has an open bridge. Regardless, the configuration encourages relaxation and dining, with big seating areas and a barbecue. Sit in a pedestal chair next to your captain to chart your next adventure, or head aft to soak in the hot tub. The layout strikes a nice balance between encouraging interaction with your crew and letting you each go about your day with privacy.
Despite her size, the Ocean Alexander 84R incorporates some bigger-yacht features you surely wouldn’t expect. The bow lounging/sunning area is a good example. It handily accommodates all eight passengers, with elbow room left over. Yet another example is the mini beach club off the submersible swim platform. Raise the transom to reveal a bar top ideal for setting up snacks and lining up drinks. Ocean Alexander can incorporate a small refrigerator, too. Regardless, small watertoys can stow in here, serving practical and pleasure needs. Furthermore, the head in the crew’s quarters just forward doubles as a day head for swimmers. This handily avoids the need to head up on deck and into the saloon.
So-called entry-level megayacht buyers are usually steered into projects that really don’t offer much more than extra deck space. This particular project shows it is possible to incorporate big thinking in a manageable package.
