Last week a celebration was in store at Arcadia Yachts. The owner of the newest Sherpa 80 XL looked on as the yacht launched along the Sorrento coast in Italy.
As “Sherpa” suggests, the series (originally called the Sherpa XL) is for cruising clients who want to go farther than the norm for this size range. Therefore, Arcadia Yachts engineered the Sherpa 80 XL, a 78-footer (24-meter), for a range upwards of 1,200 nautical miles at 10 knots. This comes while under power with twin Volvo Penta IPS 1350 engines. Top speed, meanwhile, is about 23 knots.
While the Volvo Penta IPS system has earned accolades for being 30 percent more fuel-efficient than traditional diesel engines, Arcadia Yachts goes a step further. It equips all of its yachts and megayachts with photo voltaic panels. According to the shipyard, aboard the Sherpa 80 XL, they can produce about 3 kW of power. The yard adds that this is enough to run the main hotel load. Saving energy, too, are low-power-draw devices along with LEDs.
While all of this makes the Sherpa series notable, the custom request of the owner of this Sherpa 80 XL stands out more. In fact, he requested a total of five staterooms. Previously, customers have asked for four, and even just three, cabins. Therefore, the higher total required reconfiguring the interior. Interestingly, the galley has moved up one deck to the sky-lounge level. It opens directly into that room, too, for a more casual, relaxed ambience come mealtime.
Yet another special request is the “winter garden” on the main aft deck. Typically, the Sherpa 80 XL, like most megayachts, has an alfresco dining area here. Since this owner plans to use the space in a variety of temperatures and perhaps weather, enclosures can protect it, and heat can keep everyone comfortable.
Otherwise, this Sherpa 80 XL preserves the extraordinary 2,368 square feet (220 square meters) of usable alfresco and enclosed leisure space that prior owners have enjoyed. Arcadia Yachts says this is 25 percent more than comparably sized yachts, too. None of it gets taken up by watertoys, either.
