Phuket is a major attraction for megayachts making their way around Southeast Asia. Port Takola, a marina and residential development being created in Thailand, intends to get some of that traffic.
Port Takola is in Krabi, about 30 nautical miles from Phuket. It’s further near the famous cruising attraction Phang Nga Bay. (If you’re a James Bond fan, recall that Phang Nga Bay was featured prominently in The Man With the Golden Gun.) A 40-minute drive also takes you to the international airport. Flights to and from Bangkok, Hong Kong, Singapore, and other regions depart regularly.
The first phase of the Port Takola marina gets underway this May. Already, the entrance channel, along a natural creek, has been dredged, to eight feet (2.5 meters) below LAT (Lowest Astronomical Tide). It won’t be long before the first megayachts can book a berth, either. Port Takola will feature concrete docks for yachts to 131 feet (40 meters) LOA by the summer. At that point, 48 stern-to slips, among an over 250 slips planned, will be available. Electricity, water, and fuel will be available as well. The remaining slips be completed within the next few years. So, too, will a captainerie, a restaurant with a bar, offices and retail shops for yachting-industry companies. Equally important, especially given the lack of refit and maintenance services in the region, Port Takola will feature a boatyard. While it won’t have high-tonnage-capacity lifts, repair and other technical services will be provided.
All of this is possible because Port Takola is being created on 110 acres of privately owned land. The rest of the property will include homes, a hotel, a museum, and nature trails. The developers intend to keep the buildings low profile, so as to not interfere with the natural surroundings.
To pique interest, the developers have special pricing in place for the first 20 yacht owners reserving a berth. Long-term berth sales will be available in the coming months.
