My inability to resist a classic yacht has me in love again. Meet the object of my affection, Ocean Glory. She’s a 1935 build that the respected refit and repair yard Amico & Co. refurbished from stem to stern and presented at the Monaco Yacht Show.
The yard acquired the 86-footer from her previous owner and decided to undertake the refit at a leisurely pace, which ended up being three years. Considering the scope of the work, it’s no wonder. There isn’t a single corner left untouched, yet even with modern conveniences such as stabilizers and gensets, Ocean Glory is in keeping with her original era. That’s because Amico & Co. was able to restore, rather than replace, much of her. For example, when she arrived at its facility in Genoa, Italy, her deckhouse was white; after the yard stripped off the paint, it discovered teak in excellent condition, now lacquered to show off the grains. And even though Ocean Glory presently has air conditioning and electronic navigation systems, Amico & Co. preserved the crank-open windows in her saloon and the look of her helm, right down to the still-working compass I photographed here (see the brass cylinder behind the wheel).
You can sample life aboard Ocean Glory, which cruises at a leisurely 9 knots, as she’s part of the Floating Life charter fleet. She accommodates eight guests for €35,000 per week in high season, €30,000 in low season.
