Devonport Yachts is promoting a series of expedition yachts powered by Rolls Royce diesel-electric systems, starting with the one shown here, called the 3000E.
Based on a concept originally developed by Rainsford Mann Design, the 3000E gets her name from her maximum tonnage, this being 3,000, and her purpose, this being explorations. Devonport anticipates attracting clients who want the typical luxuries of an oceangoing motoryacht yet one with a more rugged profile and capable of toting myriad toys.
On the luxury side, the 3000E features a private owner’s deck, positioned fully forward and just below a crow’s nest that’s really more akin to a small sundeck. Given the popularity of fold-down balconies, the yacht will have at least two: one along the starboard side, in the lower-deck gym/spa; and one fully aft, transforming the stern into a beach club. One level above the main deck has sprawling space devoted to a helipad as well as a pool and sunning area. Things get interesting forward of here. The walking surface of the deck narrows, to a strip running along the centerline. That’s because outboard of the walkway is storage for two 14-meter (46-foot) tenders. The illustration here shows a sailboat to starboard, but Devonport will, of course, accommodate whatever type of boat an owner wishes to take along. Additional space below decks houses two more tenders, these maxing out at 10 meters (about 33 feet).
On the technical side, preliminary plans show a two-level engine room amidships. Details on other operational systems as well as their exact placement haven’t been revealed, as these will depend heavily on an owner’s and his crew’s preferences.
In the meantime, Devonport continues work on the code-named Project 55. When launched later this year, the 96-meter (315-foot) motoryacht will mark the largest yacht built in the UK.
