Come May 1, North Cove Marina at Brookfield Place in New York City reopens for the season. This, following a renovation, and in time for the marina to host the America’s Cup World Series.
You may recall that beautification and structural upgrades were announced last year for North Cove Marina. The facility has new floating docks and 32 slips, the latter an increased capacity. The number of megayacht slips remains the same, at eight. Megayachts to 175 feet (53.3 meters) can reserve dockage. Both power and sailing superyachts can be accommodated, given a draft of 16 feet (5 meters).
Among the prime attractions of North Cove Marina, now managed by IGY Marinas, is its location in downtown New York. Dozens of shops and restaurants are walking distance away, at the adjacent Brookfield Place. The 9/11 Memorial is also within walking distance. Taxi and subway rides take you to the rest of what Manhattan has to offer.
Come May 7 and 8, Manhattan and specifically the area around North Cove Marina will host the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series. It’s especially significant, since the America’s Cup last took place in New York 96 years ago. The central event village will be located at Brookfield Place Waterfront Place, which surrounds North Cove Marina. The artist’s rendering above gives you an idea of how things will be arranged. All activities, including entertainment, are free for the public. These include the “Dock Out” show, during which each team’s skipper comments prior to the races on May 7 and 8. Spectator areas, which include broadcast screens and live announcing, will stretch up toward Pier 25. Across the Hudson River in New Jersey, they’ll go from Liberty State Park to Jersey City.
Races will end just off the plaza, too. The full race course will be determined by the weather those days. Regardless, six teams, including Oracle Team USA, will participate in the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series. Points earned count toward the final competition, the 35th America’s Cup, being held in Bermuda next year.
