Seasoned cruisers from New Jersey may be spending the end-of-the-year holidays aboard their new Christensen. They’ve acquired hull 38, which should be ready in less than six months.
Hull 38, a 164-footer (50-meter), is well into the completion stages because construction started under a prior owner. Henry Luken, chairman of the Washington State shipyard, initially commissioned her. The hull and superstructure joined together in February of last year.
A few things attracted the new owners’ attention. For example, hull 38 is part of Christensen’s 50-meter series. That series has seen deliveries such as Chasseur and Silver Lining in recent years, as well as several deliveries in years prior. In terms of engineering, the owners can anticipate long range. Hull 38, equipped with a bulbous bow, should see about 5,000 nautical miles when cruising at 12 knots. The twin MTUs should also allow a maximum speed of 16 knots.
The onboard living environment, designed by VARO Interior Design, also held strong appeal. As seen at left, the interior wood paneling and stonework are already well on their way to completion. The photo reveals the details contained within the VIP’s en suite bath. (That VIP, by the way, spans the full beam below decks.) Raised-panel black walnut pairs with striking marble and onyx throughout hull 38. In addition, the stateroom total and arrangements appealed to them. Besides the just-mentioned VIP, the megayacht has four guest staterooms below decks, along with a main-deck master suite.
Even as part of the 50-meter series, hull 38 has some differentiating characteristics. For instance, she’s the first megayacht from Christensen to include an engineer’s cabin in the lazarette. She further has a dual-loop HVAC system developed in house by the builder. Extra sound and vibration control methods have been applied, as has insulation. The latter means the yacht needs less-powerful (and less energy-consuming) air conditioning. Finally, the electronics in her wheelhouse are mostly from Garmin. While a proven name in nautical circles, Garmin typically doesn’t work in the megayacht market.
While Christensen continues construction on hull 38, it’s further working on another project. Available for sale, hull 42 measures the same size. She’ll be ready for delivery in early 2020.
