“This is the boat I’ve been waiting for my whole life,” says Paul Kinkley, the owner of the yacht Slow Ride. Present in Turkey for the launch of his Bering 78, he’s eagerly awaiting putting her long range to the test.
Bering Yachts, which recently announced the Bering 165 yacht as its biggest boat, focuses on long-range, rugged-looking megayachts. The yacht Slow Ride pledges being able to put 3,000 nautical miles under her hull. Although all of the builder’s launches feature steel hulls, the Bering 78 has a shallow draft. In fact, it’s just 4’7” (1.45 meters), purposely so that customers can explore some of the world’s skinnier waters.
Striking in a rich teal paint job, this 78-footer (nearly 24-meter) is aptly christened by Kinkley. According to Bering Yachts, she should see a top speed of 10 knots. The yacht Slow Ride further should cruise most efficiently at 8 knots, with twin Cummins engines beneath her decks.
Notably, Bering Yachts planned the Bering 78 to appeal to different types of owners: those who are hands on, and those who have professional crew. In Kinkley’s case, he’s an owner-operator. His soon-to-be-favorite place aboard is the flying bridge, both for taking the wheel and for kicking back and relaxing. He further has an affinity for engine rooms, being a diesel mechanic. Future hulls can come with a crew area for two people.

As Kinkley said on launch day, he and his family are looking forward to cruising around the Med shortly after delivery. Several of the anchorages nearby the shipyard will be first on the itinerary. Simultaneously, “Who knows where it will take us?” He adds, “We just can’t wait to get on the water and start sailing.”
