Mondo Marine has made a name for itself via a number of custom motoryachts. These include Tribù, which has completed three global trips and is ready for more. The Italian builder is ready for more, too, especially expanding its horizons. It’s shopping its first-ever motorsailer project, the Mondo Marine SM45 Project Amerigo, to clients looking to do the same.
The 147-foot (45-meter) yacht bears styling by Massimo Franchini, a naval architect with a strong background in motorsailers as well as motoryachts. Naval architecture is by Michele Ansaloni, who is also experienced with motorsailers. The Mondo Marine SM45 Project Amerigo was conceived to blend the benefits of that model type with those of motoryachts. Put another way, the yacht is targeted to buyers attracted to the performance aspects of sailing but the volume advantages of power yachts.
The all-aluminum SM45 Project Amerigo will employ a single 16V 2000 Series MTU engine and 9,149-square-foot (850-square-meter) sail plan. The ketch-rigged yacht, with square-top mains, is intended for simplified operations, too; no need for race-crew numbers or experience levels. Also noteworthy, Mondo Marine says the adjustable-pitch propeller can be flipped up when the engine isn’t running, to reduce drag. The builder further has tank tested the SM45 Project Amerigo hull design, with a fixed keel for an 18-foot (5.5-meter) draft, to ensure low resistance in traditional cruising mode. Under solely engine power, the motorsailer should see a 14-knot top end.
The SM45 Project Amerigo offers the benefits of a motoryacht in her creature comforts. With a beam of 31’5” (9.6 meters), she has alfresco and interior spaces comparable to those of a motoryacht of the same size. Mondo Marine plans to customize the areas for the buyer. The suggested layout includes a main-deck owner’s suite (above) with a balcony and four guest staterooms. It also includes customary formal dining inside, main- and upper-deck saloons, and a garage/beach club.
The video below gives a better overview of the design. She’ll be MCA compliant and fall beneath the 500-gross-ton mark, too. For more information on the project from Mondo Marine and Denison Super Yacht Division, its U.S. representative, please fill out our contact form.
