Piet Behage of P.B. Behage believes that megayacht owners seeking new experiences can do so even more conveniently, and efficiently. He penned the Eastern Red concept for two prime reasons. First, to allow all-season cruising aboard a yacht where panoramic views are possible on more than one deck. And second, to incorporate new technology for practical purposes.
Eastern Red measures 146’10” (44.8 meters), with a 27’4” (8.35-meter) beam. Her round-bilge, displacement-style steel hull is engineered for moderate speeds. Behage anticipates a cruise speed just shy of 12 knots and a healthy range of 3,850 nautical miles at 12.2 knots. Performance figures are based on triple 650-hp engines.
Yes, you read that correctly: Eastern Red is a triple-engine design, diesel-electric to be specific. Why? Behage cites a common problem with some twin-engine projects. Increasing the rpm also increases fuel burn, with no real speed benefit. It’s bad for the budget and the environment. With Eastern Red, Behage says, “special software allows for not only the clever interplay between the engines, but also for maximum efficiency and low consumption.” For example, Eastern Red can employ just the central electric motor for repositioning or for anchoring maneuvers. The latter is particularly good in environmentally sensitive areas, due to being quiet.
Other interesting technical aspects of Eastern Red involve docking and maintenance. The yacht has a telescopic vertical docking system. It’s incorporated in the forepeak. Behage says it works both electrically (one press of a button takes care of all) and manually, particularly suited for shallow waters. As for maintenance, Eastern Red has a freshwater sprinkler system for the hull, making the eight-person crew’s job of washdowns simpler.
All of this leaves you to enjoy yourself aboard Eastern Red no matter the season or destination. Heated soles take care of comfort in cold climates. In those same areas, you’ll enjoy excellent views on the main and upper decks via wrap-around, full-height windows. Seven to nine friends and family can join you. Behage will work with you to arrange areas as you wish. Naturally, Eastern Red can devote the forward main deck to your suite, with an office and breakfast area. Regardless, all main-deck relaxation areas are full beam.
Behage believes that Eastern Red can be delivered as quickly as 20 months after contract (if the builder follows modular construction methods).
