Superyacht cinemas are incredibly popular. Technological improvements mean screens, visuals, and sounds are getting better all the time. But that doesn’t mean design teams are satisfied with the status quo. Nor, frankly, should you be satisfied. Specialists in cinema design, media, and yacht design have created Lumière as a result. As you can tell by the images here, Lumière turns the entire room into the movie screen. And you can thoroughly, and gleefully, engross yourself in the action and images.
The name Lumière comes from Auguste and Louis Lumière, brothers who invented one of the first motion-picture cameras and projectors in the 1890s. The Lumière yachting experience comes from Genesis Technologies Marine, a Germany-based company specializing in high-end media rooms and more, and Van Geest Design. The firm reached out to Van Geest Design, in fact, to explore putting the “wow” in the wow factor onboard. The question was how to augment the sensory experience.
While 3D movies and virtual reality each certainly augment your experience, the two companies didn’t want to use them. Their goal was to explore untapped, and unexpected, potential. They brought in additional specialists, too. These include Philips, for its LightVibes ambient LED technology. LightVibes, introduced in the UK in 2014 and stateside this year, uses ambient video and surround lighting effects in your peripheral field of vision. It makes a movie feel more real. Further specialists include furniture makers.
By bringing all these companies together, Van Geest Design says, Lumière lets you enjoy a host of audio and visual experiences. “Ride” a roller coaster through wild plunges and loops. You can “surf” a gnarly wave, or peacefully “swim” up to the ocean’s surface, too. Lumière further takes concert footage to a new level. Van Geest Design adds that the technology transforms even just music by itself. And, you can create what Pieter Van Geest calls a “chilling-out space.”
For ease of owners and designers, Lumière installation is turn-key. All furnishings, projectors, and related components exist, awaiting only a conversation for manufacturing and integration into your yacht. Check it out:
