To call this aerial view of the magnificent Maltese Falcon a snapshot really doesn’t do it justice. Even the fact that I’ve made it a tad bigger than other photos posted over the past few weeks doesn’t convey the majesty of the three-masted clipper. I’m sharing it courtesy of Rich Page, who took it during the Superyacht Cup race in June. While several photographers were on hand in Spain, Rich was apparently the only one in a helicopter on the last day, which is how he captured MF. The yacht easily achieved 17 knots in a southwesterly that was blowing upwards of 22 knots and giving fits to other competitors.
If you’re a sailing fan, no doubt you followed the news of the 52 yachts–which, besides Perini Navi’s Maltese Falcon, included Royal Huisman’s Gliss, Camper & Nicholson’s classic Velsheda, Vitters’ Yanakee Too, and Alloy Yachts’ Kokomo–as they competed over three days. It was the largest gathering of sailing yachts ever, and several of the yachts’ builders, naval architects, and interior designers were on hand as well.
If you missed this event, fear not; there’s another Superyacht Cup coming up December 12 to 15 in Antigua. For information on how to enter, click here. And to see more of Rich’s excellent images from the race, click here.
