I’m a big believer in karma, which is one of the reasons why I can hardly believe not a single soul has come forth so far with information about the hit-and-run accident that could have nearly killed Suki Finnerty and Julie Perry, two terrific people in the yacht business. It’s been nearly two months since a car plowed into the back of the pedicab they were riding in and took off, and even the Fort Lauderdale police are shocked.
Despite that frustration and, I’m sure, worry over medical bills, Suki was in good spirits when I saw her last week during the costume party that Power & Motoryacht throws during the Miami International Boat Show. Using a wheelchair to get around better while her leg, which was badly broken, heals, Suki joked that she was dressed as Britney Spears just getting out of rehab.
Julie is also recovering from some pretty severe injuries, including a fractured skull, and judging from her e-mails, she’s doing her best to keep her spirits up, too. But the reality of her medical bills as well as Suki’s are also weighing heavily on both of them–plus the fact that the company running the pedicab should never have been permitted to operate in Fort Lauderdale. The owner’s application was recommended for rejection, yet somehow he got approved anyway. Read this blog post by Julie to get the details; your blood will probably be boiling by the end of it (I know mine was).
The $1,000 reward still stands for information leading to the arrest of the driver. I can’t stress it enough: If you know something, SAY SOMETHING. And if you know someone who might have information, no matter how seemingly insignificant, urge him or her to call the police. Everything is kept confidential. Broward County Crime Stoppers is at (954) 493-TIPS, and Fort Lauderdale’s Traffic Homicide Investigator is at (954) 828-5755.
