I learned some horrifying news yesterday: Two people in the yacht industry who I admire personally and professionally were seriously injured in a hit-and-run accident in Fort Lauderdale early on New Year’s Day. I’m writing this in hopes that someone may have seen the incident and can help local police, since they’re still searching for the driver.
Julie Perry, who some of you may know as the cheery vidcaster on TheBoaters.tv, and Suki Finnerty, an expert photographer and videographer (she’s shot tons of photos for Dockwalk and most of Power & Motoryacht’s videos), were riding in a pedi-cab on Las Olas Boulevard when a car slammed into the back, sending them flying. The car took off, leaving them on the scene with multiple broken bones and head injuries. Unfortunately neither of them nor the pedi-cab driver got a good look at the vehicle.
Finnerty was released from the hospital yesterday, with a long road to recovery ahead of her. I understand it from mutual connections that Perry is still there, though she’s gradually healing as well.
If you have any information, please contact Broward County Crime Stoppers at (954) 493-TIPS or Fort Lauderdale’s Traffic Homicide Investigator at (954) 828-5755.
In the meantime, if you’d like to send your wishes to Perry and/or Finnerty, post them here. I’ll be sure to pass them along–and update you on their recovery soon.
