All’s fair in love and war, they say. Now FAIR comes to the yacht world.
FAIR, which stands for Ferretti Analysis Integral Recorder, is a proprietary system being used by the Ferretti Group for all of its megayacht and production-boat brands. It enables each Group’s in-house testing department to verify whether a yacht complies with strict parameters for more than 30 different items. These include things like the angle of bow rise, engine rpm, fuel consumption, range, and speed, synchronized with additional data such as vibration and dynamic stress. The goal is to assure any buyer that he or she can expect optimal performance.
FAIR was developed in conjunction with Pisa University and actually rolled out in 2007, but just on Pershing Yachts. After testing it the past two years, the Group’s management team felt it was successful enough to apply to the other eight brands: CRN, Custom Line, Ferretti, Riva, Mochi Craft, Itama, Apreamare, and Bertram.
Here’s how it works. All conformity as well as deviations from the standards are collected and graphed in a central archive, then analyzed by the Ferretti Group’s Advanced Yacht Technology (AYT) division. AYT is comprised of about 90 people whose job is to follow the construction of each yacht, from concept to completion. (On a side note, AYT is also the division that created the proprietary Anti Rolling Gyro in conjunction with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, which damps roll reportedly up to 50 percent – and which a few magazines independently tested and confirmed works well in increasing comfort.) AYT can then report back to each brand’s managers on how well a design is working or whether any changes are needed.
The Ferretti Group feels confident that buyers will in turn gain confidence, as the repeatability of the tests permits good data comparisons and analysis.
