The ketch William Tai was commissioned (as Surama) as a global cruiser, capable of handling a variety of conditions. If ever there were a test of her mettle, her first cruise, in 1997, provided it. The 133-foot (41-meter) megayacht encountered gale-force winds while en route to what was supposed to be a relaxing first summer in the Mediterranean. She came through with flying colors, however, and yacht watchers around the world got a good first-hand look at this Royal Huisman-built beauty. She visited ports from Cuba to New Zealand, and pretty much everywhere in between, after that first season.
Under new ownership—the same person who currently owns her and has her for sale—the sailing yacht was rechristened William Tai and underwent a refit back at Royal Huisman, completed in 2010. This video reveals the pride with which William Tai’s owner and crew have kept her, from her blue hull to her airy interior. But, best of all, there’s plenty of footage of William Tai in her element, out on the open water.
